An apology to the FAA

By Lauren | May 18, 2008

A few posts back, I wrote about air travel in the U.S., linking two news stories.  The first was about the FAA’s intent to fine Southwest Airlines, the second a CNN piece about rats in Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.  I suggested (and still believe) that the deteriorating conditions airline passengers face in this country border on the inexcusable, and came down hard on the airlines and the FAA.

Turns out I hadn’t done sufficient research.  While the FAA is responsible for regulating the airlines, it’s not responsible for overseeing health and safety concerns in the airports.  In this case, it’s the Port Authority of Chicago that was responsible for keeping vermin out of O’Hare’s food courts, and it’s the Port Authority of Chicago that needs to clean things up.  I loved Ratatouille as much as anybody, but rats in the kitchen are only cute in a Pixar film.

And, to the FAA, I apologize.  Heaven knows the agency is already taking plenty of heat for its oversight of the airlines.  It was wrong of me to criticize the FAA when it was another agency who dropped the ball.
