How did your company celebrate Earth Day?

By Lauren | April 23, 2009

Yesterday’s Earth Day festivities were lots of fun, and reminded people of the importance of taking care of our planet. They also offered an opportunity for companies to step up and showcase their Earth-friendly products, services, policies, and practices … assuming, of course, that they had some.

How did your company measure up?

Frequent readers of this blog already know that I believe it’s good business ethics for companies to be part of the solution, not part of the problem, to the environmental degradation that’s threatening the future of our planet. It’s also potentially very profitable. Consumers are becoming increasingly sensitive to environmental problems and are actively looking for products and services that will help them live greener. That presents an opportunity for business and, where opportunities are found, so are profits.

But it’s also important to recognize that consumers can only do so much to protect the planet. Unless businesses take active steps to reduce their carbon emissions, thoughtfully harvest and use natural resources, responsibly dispose of waste, and make use of Earth-friendly technologies, consumer efforts probably won’t be enough to prevent environmental damage. Yes, companies have to make profits, but unless business looks to the long-term health of our planet, their future customers are almost certain to suffer.

Earth Day isn’t just about tee shirts and carpooling one day a year. If your company had reason to strut yesterday, congratulations! If not, you’ve got a whole year to figure it out. Go for it!
