Kudos to P&G for helping Gulf wildlife

By Lauren | June 28, 2010

There’s been so much bad news out of the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion that I thought it might be nice to focus on the positive efforts being made by Procter & Gamble to help clean up the spill. P&G is the producer of hundreds of household products, including Dawn dishwashing liquid. Turns out that Dawn, which has just a little bit of petroleum in it, is the perfect stuff for getting oily sludge off of seabirds, turtles and other wildlife that live in the Gulf.

P&G has donated thousands of bottles of Dawn to wildlife rescue efforts. CVS and Walgreens offered discount coupons on Dawn in San Antonio to encourage locals to buy and donate additional bottles of the detergent. And, if you buy a bottle of Dawn and go to Dawn-Dish.com and enter a code, P&G will donate $1 to the Marine Mammal Center and the International Bird Research Center. Thus far, over $425,000 has been donated.

P&G has taken a little flak in the press for its ad touting Dawn as a tool to save wildlife. Interestingly, however, consumers seem to love what P&G has done. In a poll on The Huffington Post, less than 25% of those responding saw P&G’s efforts as a cynical way to sell more dishwashing liquid. Personally, I love to see a big corporation’s reputation enhanced by public service of any kind. Heaven knows, cleaning up the Gulf is going to be a Herculean task. I applaud anybody, and any corporation, that pitches in to help.

So, go buy a bottle of Dawn, then get P&G to kick in a dollar by clicking here.

I agree with this entirely; if you do good with your product, you certainly deserve to benefit from it. Proctor and Gamble are well-deserving of any rise in profits they see from their help of the environment.

We are two teenage girls who are spending our summer collecting donations of Dawn to send to the Gulf. We have lined up a rescue organization to send it to, a freight company to take a tractor trailer filled to them, and have received nationwide media coverage. What started out to be what we thought would be a local collection has blossomed nationwide.

We have contacted DAWN (P&G) several with requests ranging from recognizing our efforts (which are increasing their profits SUBSTANTIALLY) or matching our contribution. All we get back is automated messages.

Please spread the word and message our Facebook page is sending - Help Us Help The Gulf Wildlife. And P&G, we still challenge you to match our collection!!
