Oscar’s apology to Whoopi was truly award-worthy

By Lauren | February 28, 2008

A standing ovation should go to producer Gil Cates, who delivered a top-notch apology to Whoopi Goldberg for omitting her from a montage featuring past Oscar hosts during Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Goldberg, herself an Academy Award winner, was the first African American and woman ever to host the Oscars, and she did so on four separate occasions.  Leaving her out of the montage was a pretty significant oversight.  Monday morning, Goldberg misted over when her omission from the montage was discussed on The View

So, what made Cates’ apology such a winner?

For one thing, Cates didn’t dawdle or shilly-shally.  He immediately expressed deep, unqualified regret that Goldberg had been omitted.  Instead of writing a letter or delivering his apology through the media, Cates called Goldberg and apologized directly.  He also had the good sense to express his affection and respect for Goldberg, calling her “a formidable talent.”  Not surprisingly, Goldberg graciously accepted Cates’ apology, dubbing him a “great gentleman.”

Now that, ladies and gentlemen, was a truly outstanding performance!
