This Memorial Day, remember your heroes
By Lauren | May 25, 2009
It’s Memorial Day, the day set aside in the U.S. to honor the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives for our country. It’s also a time to remember your own fallen heroes, the folks who inspired you in your professional life.
Today, I’m remembering Jack Turnquist and Dan McCarthy, two legends in the actuarial profession who devoted their careers to strengthening actuaries’ understanding of and commitment to professional ethics. It was my privilege to work with Dan and Jack for over fourteen years, watching both of them strive tirelessly to inspire the actuarial profession to hold itself to high standards of conduct and practice while “walking the talk” themselves every day. They were remarkable men, and are sorely missed.
As you think about your own heroes today, I’ll bet you’ll find that they encouraged you to be honest and fair, to keep your promises, and to bring your best efforts to whatever you did. It’s a great day to remember those people and to recommit to the lessons they taught you. Bring those ethics to your business, and you’ll strengthen the trust your customers, clients, employees and suppliers have in you. What better tribute to your personal heroes could there be?
America celebrates Memorial Day as the unofficial start of the summer, and I’d be the last person to frown on parades, blockbuster movies and barbeques. But before you slather mustard on another hot dog or head in to see the latest action flick, take a moment to remember your heroes. You, and the people who do business with you, will be glad you did.
